Arkansas Child Abuse Statistics
The Arkansas State Police, Crimes Against Children Divison, released the 2007 Annual report on February 13, 2008. Child Abuse Hot Line operators in the Crimes Against Children Division (CACD) received 50,301 telephone calls in the year 2007. Of these calls, 29,765 were accepted as legally valid allegations of abuse or neglect. They were assigned for investigation to CACD investigators or to the Arkansas Department of Human Services' (DHS) Divison of Children and Family Services (DCFS). The allegations accepted by the Hot Line are divided into categories for investigation, pursuant to an agreement with DHS. This resulted in 6,477 cases being assigned by the hotline to investigators in the CACD Investigations Section. There were 8,131 Priority I allegations and 1,869 Priority II allegations. The priority I allegations which are the most serious involved 6,553 (81%) cases of sexual abuse, indecent exposure and pornography. CACD investigators closed 6,302 cases in 2007. Of the closed cases, 2,616 (42%) were found to be true, meaning there was a preponderance of evidence that indicated the allegation was true and was thus reported to the appropriate prosecuting attorney.
